The Outside Story
The Outside Story
During their two decades in Rustic Canyon, Cydney and Gary Mandel had revamped their 1920s house twice before considering its relationship to the garden. In the third and final remodeling, San Francisco architect Tom Goodwin made the outdoors into pictures using glass walls and French doors and Santa Monica garden designer Nancy Power created garden rooms to lure people outside. Organizing the landscape, Power worked with the bold volumes of the building, creating functional patios, as well as walks, steps and understated fountains. L.A. architectural designer Clive Bridgwater conceived finishing touches--such as stacked stone walls and a freestanding fireplace that warms a terrace behind the house. Now, in place of the soggy lawn the Mandels seldom used, they have an outdoor kitchen and dining room, plus ample space for open-air lounging and parties. For planting help, the Mandels turned to Pasadena landscape architect Denis Kurutz. Their emphasis, Cydney says, was on "serenity, with an exotic twist." Given heavy shade from existing sycamores and other trees, the logical plant choices were common--"like impatiens," Cydney recalls. But she and her husband, both avid travelers, had memories of Balinese bamboos, Hawaiian bromeliads and large-leafed tropicals from Indonesia. They wanted to de-emphasize flowers and showcase foliage in mass plantings that would stand up against their tall, geometric house.Kurutz's focus was to assemble the wide variety of plants and make them all work in harmony with the setting. "It's cool and wet here in this canyon, and ferns speak to that," he says. "So do strap-leafed plants, from mondo grass around paving stones to giant crinum lilies." Eye-catching accents include a yellow-striped bamboo, visible from the dining room; fiery orange epidendrums planted along a hillside walk above; and yellow kangaroo paws beside the pool in front of the house. "In certain areas, we sought relief from green," says Kurutz, who delighted in hunting down character plants, such as Dalechampia dioscoreifolia, a vine with bat-shaped purple blooms. With the plants in place and growing strong, the Mandels are busy furnishing their verdant rooms. They found a granite pedestal in China for their outdoor living room, a marble-topped table in Paris and a pair of upholstered lounging chairs at Blackman Cruz, a shop on La Cienega Boulevard. In dry weather, Cydney unrolls a sisal rug in front of the fireplace and, in the cool evenings, she sets floor lamps and heaters amid the chairs. "In the beginning," she says, "I resisted all the paving. But it's made the garden usable. Instead of seeing it from a distance, we're out there all the time."
A Girl's Best Friend Isn't for Sale (well, OK)
A Girl's Best Friend Isn't for Sale (well, OK)
Kirsty is taking a long time brushing her hair, striking an indifferent pose to her friend's nagging, enjoying the privacy of staring into a mirror. Kirsty is sitting sideways, with her legs crossed, on the sandy steps at Federation Square; the mirror is in the lid of her make-up box, which she has set on top of the video camera's silver case. Her friend Laura stands a few steps down, holding the camera aloft in her palm; in the way her ancient relatives once hefted spears. For a while Laura's been saying things like "We have a lot to do" and "We're going run out of time" and "Aw, come on". Laura may as well be banging on a locked bathroom door.Suddenly, Kirsty moans in despair. Her hair is long and straight, very shiny, but she's brushed it so much she's mucked up the part on the side - and needs to start from scratch."Kirsty!" It comes out of Laura like a curse, then she flounces and looks at me.In between outbursts, she has been telling me their story. Kirsty and Laura - a year out of school and "best friends for years" - are making a video tour of the city. Laura plans to send copies to her pen pal in France and her grandparents in Brisbane. Kirsty plans to send copies to television producers; she "wants to be an actress or read the news or just be in commercials".Laura compiled the list of places they need to visit on the tour, wrote the script and will be doing the camera work. Kirsty is the on-screen personality but she doesn't like the script - a series of short and chatty descriptions of places such as Federation Square, the Town Hall, Parliament House, the Old Melbourne Gaol and so on."It's boring," she says, checking her lips and eyes in the mirror and suddenly smiling and ready to get on with it. "Well, come on." At this point Laura brings the conversation back to its original topic. "I suppose if you can buy a best friend on the internet, you can sell one too. How much do you think I'd get for Kirsty?" Now we are getting to the heart of the matter. I'd been wandering around, looking for a couple of "best friends". I wanted to know what a best friend was worth, in cash terms.A young fellow named Stuart Donald is probably sitting at his computer in Scotland at this moment, watching the eBay shopping website, where he is selling himself as best friend for a month to the highest bidder.Donald doesn't plan to hang out with his new best friend - no fireside ales and jolly tales. Instead, he's offering a modest package of emails, letters and text messages. Donald hasn't set a reserve price."It's just a stunt," says Laura."It's creepy," says Kirsty."I think I'll definitely sell you then," says Laura. So how much does Laura want for Kirsty?"I think I'd settle for a bottle of tequila." "Hey," says Kirsty, brightening, "that's what we could do. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just emails. You could have like a dozen (best friends) at the same time and just send them copies of the same emails." Suddenly Kirsty and Laura are riotous best friends again, making plans to sell each other off for shoes, clothes and make-up. It's all very giddy until Laura worries that Kirsty is serious about the idea."It's fun to think about," says Laura, sobering. "But you'd just be preying on all the sad cases." Kirsty makes a sad face to keep in step with her friend. "Yeah," she says. "There's a lot of them out there. But don't you think they'd get something out of it?"

LED's, Resistors and a Battery?
Just put 100 ohm in series to be safe1. DIY LED lamp is less powerful than expectedFrom your mention of a test with a 14 volt supply, it appears that most voltage is being lost in the wires between the supply and light panel - if so, you need significantly larger wire for that connection. All wires have some resistance, and you must consider this resistance when determining the required wire size for a given current and cable length2. What reasons led to the start of skinning animals? To eat their meat without their skinWhat reasons led to the start of skinning animals?5. Which would give a better glow, neon tubes or LED strips?LED's by a mile. Especially on a car. You can run them off the battery without any high voltage inverters. They still require a power supply, but at a safer voltage, at around 2v, as opposed to 2,000v required to run a neon tube. LEDs are obviously less inclined to break than a glass tube, and are generally brighter without using tons of energy, therefore, not draining your battery. The only downside to LEDs is that they are directional lamps, so they only light up where you point them, as neon tubes evenly disperse their light. You would need some sort of diffuser for the LED strips if they do not come with one6. What factors led to the decline of the Ottoman Empire? Some scholars argue the power of the Caliphate began waning by 1683, and without the acquisition of significant new wealth the Ottoman Empire went into a fast decline. Ottomanist scholars, however, have based research on Ottoman archives that show the decline narrative to be tenuous - their historiography describes an economically vibrant and growing empire with a sophisticated political leadership brought to a premature end after the First World War. Berkes was one of the first writers in the 1960s to summarise the works on Ottoman socio-economic history. He suggested one of the reasons for Ottoman economic decline was the inability of the ruling class to make a clear choice between war and the more conventional types of capital formation. Berkes' work however focused on the confrontation of the Ottomans and the Europeans, and though important, had little detail on the commercial activities of the state. Itzkowitz and nalcik state Ottoman writers attributed the Empire's troubles to the dissolution of the circle of equity, erosion of the sultan's authority, disruption of the timar system and the demise of the devshirme, "describing symptoms rather than causes". They argue causes comprised geographical and logistical limitations, population growth after the 16th century, inflation due to influx of Peruvian silver and the end of profitable conquests. Itzkowitz states, "the state could find no remedy" to these problems, and nalcik, "As a result of these upheavals, the Ottoman Empire of the seventeenth century was no longer the vital empire it had been in the sixteenth" - however neither show the issues remained a long-term problem. Several factors contributed to the Empire's decline: The European powers wanted to expand Corrupt religious opposition to critical thinking; the corrupt ulema wanted to "protect" their position as heads of state. They discouraged creativity to keep the populace from information that might be disseminated through books other than the Koran. Muslims had been aware of the printing press since the 15th century, but it was not until 1727 -- 272 years after Gutenberg-that the eyhlislam released a fetva decreeing its compatibility with Islam. Economic problems: Competition from trade from the Americas Competition from cheap products from India and the Far East Development of other trade routes Rising unemployment within the Empire Government problems: Ottoman Empire became less centralised, and central control weakened Sultans being less severe in maintaining rigorous standards of integrity in the administration of the Empire Political problems: Sultans becoming less sensitive to public opinion The low quality Sultans of the 17th and 18th centuries The ending of the execution of Sultans' sons and brothers, imprisoning them instead This apparently humane process led to men becoming Sultan after spending years in prison - not the best training for absolute power

George Herriman's Krazy Kat cartoon strip used Monument Valley as a setting. The book cover for Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road (2002), by Neil Peart of the band Rush, shows a picture that Neil took of his motorcycle in Monument Valley.TelevisionThe rugged desert scenery for the Coyote and Road Runner (1949-) cartoons takes much of its inspiration from Monument Valley. In the 1978 Super Friends episode "The Pied Piper from Space", alien space ships abduct children, including the Wonder Twins, and they board the spaceships at Monument Valley. In the 1980s American action/espionage television series Airwolf, a hollowed butte is portrayed as the secret hiding place ("The Lair") of the eponymous high-tech military helicopter. Monument Valley is renamed the "Valley of the Gods" in this series. The actual Valley of the Gods is a few miles north in Utah. The shots of The Lair were actually a mix of matte paintings and shots from three locations within close proximity of each other. The 2011 Doctor Who episodes "The Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon" contain sequences shot in Monument Valley (although not in the exact location given in the episode). This was the first time Doctor Who has filmed principal photography on location in America. Past episodes that take place in America were never shot in the US, including the 1996 TV film which takes place in San Francisco but was shot in Vancouver. In a 2014 Adult Swim bump Monument Valley was shown with lights going through the trails. Numerous scenes from the HBO series Westworld were filmed in Monument Valley. Monument Valley appears in the third-season premiere of the television adaptation of The Man in the High Castle, titled "Now More Than Ever, We Care About You." In this alternate history, the Empire of Japan tests an atomic bomb there.
Why Is the Purchase of Smart Door Locks so Small
Why Is the Purchase of Smart Door Locks so Small
Since 2015, the smart door lock industry has entered a period of rapid growth, with a significant increase in annual shipments. Especially in 2018, the shipment volume in the first half of the previous year has exceeded the annual shipment volume in 2017. In view of this growth rate, some market institutions predict that the annual shipment will exceed 22 million in 2018 and 30 million sets in 2019.Such a "wonderful" number is really like a dose of "heart booster" to stimulate the market confidence of the majority of door lock enterprises. At the same time, it also makes many entrepreneurs see a new 100 billion market. As a result, a large number of door lock enterprises have been established and many brands stand in the city.If it grows at this rate, it is indeed expected to reach the 100 million mark in a few years. There are more than 600 million families in China, and the penetration rate of smart door lock in the home end is only 3%, while that in Europe and the United States is more than 40%, and that in Japan and South Korea is about 70%. However, the vision of the market was severely "beaten in the face" by the reality. In 2018, the actual shipment of smart door locks nationwide was about 12 million sets, which is far from the predicted figure. What about 2019? The author learned from people in the industry that the shipment volume in the first half of 2019 was about 6 million units, which decreased slightly compared with last year. It is expected that the annual shipment volume will also remain at the level of 2018, about 12-13 million units. It is reasonable to say that the application of intelligent products has been gradually accepted by consumers, and the "body" and "money" in the "skill key money" have been gradually far away from our belongings, so it should be acceptable to use intelligent door locks without carrying keys. However, the purchase of smart door locks is still small. The author believes that there are mainly the following reasons.Consumers lack confidence in product safetyDoor lock is the first defense of family safety. Its function is to ensure safety and prevent illegal intrusion. Therefore, the safety of intelligent door lock is not only its core value, but also the most concerned factor for consumers to buy products. However, the security problems of intelligent door lock are frequently exposed and frequently reported. The State Administration of market supervision and administration, CCTV and consumer associations all revealed the safety problems of smart door locks through the media, and the sampling test results are worrying. There are security vulnerabilities in the mainstream fingerprint, password, IC card and remote unlocking functions.1. Security problems of fingerprint unlocking functionFingerprint unlocking of intelligent door lock is divided into optical fingerprint identification and semiconductor fingerprint identification. Optical fingerprint refers to fingerprint acquisition and authentication through the surface texture of light reflection fingerprint, which has certain obstacles to false fingerprint identification. Therefore, the security level of optical fingerprint identification is relatively low.Semiconductor fingerprint head can identify and authenticate fingerprints through technologies such as temperature, capacitance value and inductance value, which can more effectively prevent the risk of "false fingerprints" such as fingerprint film and fingerprint sleeve, and the security level is relatively high. However, at present, the fingerprint identification modules used by most intelligent door locks are the overall scheme provided by fingerprint module manufacturers, including the encryption verification mechanism for fingerprint reading, storage and identification. Whether the key strength in this encryption mechanism can resist attack is unknown. Especially for networked locks, when cloud verification is required, the transmission encryption of fingerprint verification instructions is particularly important. Whether it can prevent network attacks and information leakage is an important security issue to be considered.2. Security problems of IC card unlocking functionThe security problem of IC card unlocking is more prominent. According to the test results of the Consumer Association, more than 85% of the samples are unqualified. According to the author, at present, more than 95% of the unlocking IC cards used in smart door locks are M1 cards. The card algorithm was cracked as early as 2009, and there is a M1 card cracking program on a treasure. No matter whether the smart door lock manufacturer adds a key to the M1 card or not, the key can be read out and copied through the cracking program. Once the key is read out, the key can be cracked exhaustively, which will lead to the complete breach of the key of the intelligent door lock enterprise, resulting in a huge security risk of the sold products. Therefore, the security risk of IC card unlocking comes from M1 card.In addition, some smart door locks can be unlocked by binding bus cards, bank cards and ID cards. The security risk of this function is greater, because this unlocking method does not even have a card verification key. It is only authenticated and unlocked through the chip uid number or serial number, without any security protection, which is a great risk.3. Remote unlockRemote unlocking is to control the door lock through the mobile phone app to achieve the purpose of authentication unlocking. At present, there are Bluetooth, ZigBee, WiFi, Nb, Lora and other connection methods, but no matter which way, it needs to connect and interact with the intelligent door lock control cloud platform, so there are network attacks and command interception in the process of information transmission. Whether the instruction transmission has encryption protection and whether the cloud platform has anti attack capability are related to the overall security of the product."Infighting" intensifies and it is difficult to form a brand effectAt present, there are more than 2000 domestic intelligent door lock enterprises and about 3000 brands. Most of them belong to the scale of "small workshops" and impact the market at low prices, making the original healthy market "scattered". Some door lock enterprises have no choice but to reduce prices and participate in the price fight. How is the current smart door lock market like the mobile phone market a few years ago? Low price door locks are everywhere, and when will the price fight end.Intelligent door lock is a product integrating traditional hardware and intelligent control. It requires not only familiarity with traditional hardware, but also research and development of product design, electronic control, information security and network transmission. More importantly, it is necessary to establish production line, sales channel and after-sales service system, which requires huge capital investment for enterprises.Low profit margin product sales lead many enterprises to reduce investment in product design, R & D and iteration, and tilt limited funds to sales (especially door lock enterprises focusing on offline sales). Is this strategy right or wrong? The author believes that under such market competition, the strategic adjustment of enterprises is also helpless. After all, the survival of enterprises is the first. When I communicate with people in the industry, I often hear enterprises complain about the impact of low-cost products on the market, but I am very helpless. I also hope that the market can eliminate some "three noes" enterprises. However, there will be low-cost competition at any time, and it is difficult to achieve the purpose of survival of the fittest only through market "reshuffle".Product homogeneity, lack of "bright" productsThe core of intelligent door lock is security, taking into account the greatest attribute of convenience and intelligence. The current intelligent door locks are innovated in the unlocking mode, so they are seriously homogeneous, easy to imitate and easy to produce. However, in view of the investment in R & D costs, almost all manufacturers follow the superposition of security functions, so it is difficult to produce "hot" products that make consumers excited and have a strong desire to buy.The homogenization of product design is serious, and the product has not really entered the hearts of consumersUser habits have not been really developed. At present, most domestic users are still used to using key lock. In particular, the middle-aged and elderly people have deep traditional ideas. First, they lack interest in new things, and second, they lack consumption motivation, which makes people feel that it is not necessary to spend "wronged money".IResearch has released relevant data. Nearly 65% of respondents said that when it is necessary to replace the anti-theft door or lock, they will consider the smart door lock, but they will not change the lock simply because of changing the lock. At the same time, the frequent security problems of intelligent door lock are also an important reason why users can't go up.In view of the above reasons, the author puts forward some ideas for readers:1. Improve product qualityQuality is the "King" of products. Involving product safety, stability and durability. In terms of safety, the overall safety of the product shall be improved under the existing technical conditions. The most important thing is that the IC card should be replaced with CPU card. The fingerprint verification, remote transmission and password verification should be added with the key for encryption verification and secure transmission, so as to improve the overall anti attack ability of the product.2. Innovative product performanceSmart door locks must be Internet of things products in the future. Research should be carried out from the perspective of Internet of things smart home products in the next 2-3 years to innovate the new functional value of smart door locks in addition to unlocking. In this way, inevitable technical barriers are formed to achieve the purpose of core competitiveness.3. Improve reputation and establish brand effectThe negative report of smart door lock has dragged down consumers' purchase confidence. The smart door lock industry needs several "leading brothers" to carry the banner, stabilize the market and revitalize the reputation of industry products. At the same time, verify the product quality through self inspection and external inspection, and establish a list of industry brands.4. Scene ecologyIntelligent door locks tend to be ecological. In the field of smart home, the era of "single product is the king" has ended. Especially under 5g, smart home products that cannot be integrated into ecology are not good products. Therefore, it is obvious that the intelligent door lock also needs to be ecologically linked with the whole intelligent system in order to have more tenacious vitality. For example, integrated into the smart community application system, the "smooth opening" of community access control, unit access control and home door lock can be realized through one key or one card of mobile phone. At the same time, the application in the field of urban public services can be opened horizontally. Taking public transport tools with smart door lock card (physical card or mobile phone card) is no longer a dream.Once the ecological scenario is formed, the directional selection of intelligent door lock products will open the competitive gap with similar products.
